Children and Young Person’s Officers have teamed up with school staff, youth workers and Safer Neighbourhood Teams for Operation K-Kool.

January 2010 saw the first in a number of patrols conducted by police and their partner agencies in areas that typically attract antisocial behaviour.

Teams led by PC Paul Chappell patrolled the Woodhouse, Stradbrook and Manor areas with staff from City School, Stradbrook Road, Sheffield, and colleagues from the Woodhouse Safer Neighbourhood Team.

More than 60 young people were spoken to and encouraged to attend activities and events in their area.

The teams used night vision goggles to patrol the park areas and Bluetooth messages to advertise public events for youngsters. More than 100 messages were accepted.

The team also visited residents who had experienced antisocial behaviour problems before to offer reassurance and advice.

Referrals were also made to partner agencies about broken lamp posts and graffiti. Photographs were taken of a number of graffiti tags in the area and circulated to schools and other agencies to identify offenders.

Acting Sergeant Simon Kirkham leads the Sheffield Children and Young People’s Team.

He said: "This was a really successful operation and I am very pleased with the team and staff from City School.

“The young people we met were really positive and their attitude was very impressive. We spent a lot of time discussing local issues. There were some really good suggestions made.

“The night vision equipment caused quite a bit of interest especially when demonstrated by school staff.

“Our priority will be to continue to address antisocial behaviour but I feel it is of equal importance to recognise good citizenship by our young people when we see it.”
